Captains
Courageous
You might be expecting
a shout-out to the previous administration for enabling
our armed
forces, the CIA and FBI to be as well-trained, well-equipped and prepared as they are to thwart global terrorist efforts on land and
at sea.
You wouldn't be surprised
if I broke the news that Maersk Alabama Captain Richard
Phillips is a gung-ho right wing compatriot of mine who couldn't
wait to engage seagoing miscreants from the bottom of the
international food chain.
You would guess that I
would cite this remarkable example of the careful, thoughtful use of
military might as a lesson to those who would have us speak loudly
-- and endlessly -- without carrying even a small stick.
Well, I actually have
praise for the president-in-training for keeping his mouth shut and
making sure that the gaffers in his cabinet did likewise during the
piracy crisis and for simply giving the order for those who know
what they're doing to get it done.
More praise, still, for
Obama deciding to stay home, go to church and play with his kids and
the new dog while the professionals were allowed to do their thing
in as covert a manner as the incident demanded.
Furthermore, I am certain
that, regardless of Captain Phillips' political preferences, he has
learned to be even more politically correct than the most liberal
folks among us. Living in Vermont, the Captain and his family
would be outcasts if they publicly portrayed anything but a
friendly, PC demeanor to their overwhelmingly leftist comrades.
Yes, this is was a
remarkable example of the careful, thoughtful use of military might.
But without a brave,
perseverant, red-blooded American willing to put his own life at
risk to avoid the potential death of so many of his fellow citizens
there could have been a very different ending.
Like every member of our
armed forces, Captain Phillips volunteered for his surrogate hostage
service and, thankfully, was ready, willing and able to put his
merchant marine training to good use. Similarly, in February
another Captain utilized military training to enable the rescue of a
planeload of passengers in his own spontaneous execution of
intelligent courage.
The shout-out today,
therefore, goes to those who selflessly defend our nation regardless
of the president's name, party affiliation, agenda or political philosophy.
If
only the other elements of our overgrown government were as
dedicated and efficient.

Speaking of the military, absentee ballots from the armed forces are scheduled to be opened
and counted starting on 4/14/09. It will be interesting to see whether
the generally conservative members of the armed forces are as caught
up in Obama-mania as is much as the general population.
