According to the book blurb of 40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation James Carville demonstrates why the right-wing faithful shouldn't be holding their breath for their party's second coming. Of course, that was before he read the handwriting on the wall after Obama took office.

"Things were a lot like they are today. A young, exciting president. Big majorities in Congress. We figured we'd have plenty of time to build the America we wanted.  You know what happened next. Fifty-four new Republicans elected in the House. Eight new Republicans elected in the Senate.  Our moment of opportunity had passed. Republicans are hoping 2010 is the new 1994. But heck, they don't need eight new senators. If they gain just one or two, it's going to be that much easier for them to scuttle vital legislation."  - James Carville 6/25/09

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following was originally published 8/23/09, prior to the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey in which the Republican candidates both won by astonishingly wide margins, despite Obama winning in their states a year earlier and despite his numerous appearances with the unsuccessful Democrat candidates.  Then there was the special election for the vacated 23rd NY Congressional District seat in which an unknown, uncharismatic Conservative third party candidate very nearly beat the Obama/Biden-endorsed Democrat candidate in a district in which the Republican was endorsed by the NY Liberal Party.

Now it's the Massachusetts shocker in which Scott Brown overcame yet another hug-me-Obama candidate to win the senatorial seat left vacant by the passing of uber-lib Edward Kennedy.  For Teddy, national health care legislation was a lifelong political ambition.  The president dedicated his own efforts to Kennedy and to getting any form of their agenda passed.  In effect, Scott Brown beat two of the most powerful candidates of our lifetime yesterday along with Martha Coakley -- Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama.

According to the book blurb of

40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation

"James Carville demonstrates why the right-wing faithful shouldn't be holding their breath for their party's second coming."  Of course, that was before he read the handwriting on the wall and after Obama went to work.

Stumped for a stump speech?

What do you think Democrats will do as the 2010 Congressional election grows nearer and they are faced with  the strong possibility that more incumbents than ever before will be sent packing?

The prospect of losing the tamper-proofness of the House of Representatives combined with the lame-ducking of the loudest-quacking liberal in history is certain to engender some extremely muddy, bloody, desperate down-and-dirty campaigning.

Round up the usual suspects:

  • Personal attacks and smearing of opposition candidates.

  • Continued Bush-bashing...

  • ..."Change takes time....it took Bush eight years to get us here."

  • Vast [add the word "organized" here] right-wing conspiracy

  • "Do you want Rush Limbaugh [substitute Ann Coulter] as your congressperson?

  • Demonize the "religious right", gun-toters, seniors...anyone with a voice.

  • Blame the minority for thwarting and/or diluting Obama/Congress initiatives.

  • Attack any opposing view..."Uninformed nay-sayers want Obama to fail!"

  • "We have the experience to get the job done."

  • NEW!!! "We're brave enough to stand up to extremists at town hall meetings."

So where do you start if you're running for Congress?

First, you memorize the top-ten liberal attack talking points and you recite them at the onset of every contact with your potential constituents.  By doing so, you not only take the air out of your opponent's balloon, you also gain the opportunity to mock the contrived-ness of it all when he uses them against you.

Next, you tick off the attack talking points one by one and counter them with logical new-speak.  Short and sweet, it sounds something like this...

"I'm here today at seeking your support in my effort to help you change what has gone so very wrong in Washington, DC since you last voted for a representative from our district.

Your current congressman will attack me personally, will continue to attack the former administration as though it were still in power and as though the last quarter of its tenure was not spent battling the Democrat majority in Congress.

He/she will demonize those of you who have raised your voices in the name of decency, discretion and democracy [pause for long ovation] and those of you who have always stood for the rights defined in the First and Second Amendments.

Even your right to religious freedom will be marginalized and challenged for its ancillary philosophies, particularly anti-abortionism and the popular view that the Biblical definition of marriage is not in need of revision.  That, despite the fact that the US Constitution never mentions these issues.

Those commentators and spokespersons with whom you identify -- for their ability to express your own thoughts about broken, bloated government and runaway liberalism -- will be demonized.  You, in turn, will be mocked for allowing such tails to wag the dog.  YOU, of course, will always be considered the dog.

By the time he is finished, my opponent will expect you to believe that it was his idea to hold town hall meetings so the extremist attendees would never be able to say that he's afraid to hear the voice of so-called nay-sayers. Instead of the real truth -- that every socialistic hyper-spending bill endorsed by the president has been rammed through Congress with as little debate and consideration as possible for one reason and one reason only.  BECAUSE THEY CAN.

Is that the change you voted for; change for the worse that could take forever to reverse even if your next vote changes-out the complacent Congress and the vote after that makes this dangerous president a one-termer?

You have shaken them up.  Now shake them out."

Finally, think hard and long about the legislation that would benefit the nation and your district the most.  Lay out a clear, realistic plan of implementation.

Unlike your opponent, you must never forget that voters understand the issues as well or better than you do and that they will be paying your salary.

You should be a speech writer, Eddo.

Obama and the Dem leadership still sound like they don't "get it." Going into this election, Obama was at the plate with two strikes and a ball. Massachusetts was his third strike.

One nice idea I read on a conservative forum is this: there's 18 senators NOT up for re-election this fall who purportedly "represent" their angry constituents in states that allow for senatorial recall. Two of those senators are Baucus and Tester. Perhaps recalls are in order here. I know I'd sign the petition on both.

Scott Brown did not defeat Senator Kennedy he defeated Martha Coakley. And before we give this new senator any kudos let's see what he does. He has to run for re-election in 34 months. That will be the real test. I might add if Scott Brown was so passionate about being a senator from Mass. why not run against Senator Kennedy why he was alive? But as I said let's give him time to do something other than claim victory.

[Spin it any way you like, but if Brown does nothing else for the next 34 months he will be occupying a seat in the Senate that used to symbolize liberalism and the Democrat party...just as your Dear Leader used to symbolize hope and change. More importantly, if the Democrat majority actually passes any of its agenda once Brown is seated, it will be a bi-partisan agreement not the rubber-stamp dictatorship we have now. BTW, you're a sore loser. -ED]

It wasn't a victory for Republicans, it was a victory for Independents. This was a real bell ringer and clearly demonstrated that Independents are a force to be reckoned with.

There has been much media "analysis" of the causes. No one cause can be identified. America is just fed up with politicians in general, Obama in particular. Obama has put his political capital on the line 4 times, and lost 4 in a row. His magical influence is about run out.

I particularly enjoyed Ed Schultz whining and complaining last night. He qualified to be spot lighted on his own Psycho talk. The poor progressive was in a rage and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This was the first significant sign that the Obama backlash is occurring. I'm hoping the pendulum stops at mid point and the momentum doesn't carry over to the extreme right.

2010 is the year of the Independents. Screw the Democrats and Republicans, we can do without them.

[Nonetheless, those "independents" voted for the Republican candidate...as did the conservatives. Until there is a viable third party, there are still only two choices. Sad but true. -ED]

You forgot one more line of liberal attack that I have already been hearing and that is racist attack. It has already been stated that Scott Brown was elected by a majority of Mass. "WHITE VOTERS"

If people think this is a victory, think again. Ever been in a firefight? no? then here is what happens the first shot was just fired, it struck home taking down one of the opposition, get ready for an all out attack. There will be no rules for the opposition but the rules will apply for us (sorta like the ROE in Afghanistan) They WILL hit us with EVERYTHING they have. Now is NOT the time to celebrate victory, now is the time to strengthen our positions and recruit more people to our side.  The fighting will reach a crescendo before there is a victor, the fighting will be loud and oft time one sided and it will not end until one or the other is driven back.

So My words to all you people that LOVE AMERICA, dig in and get ready for a fight. When the smoke clears we indeed must be ready to build a NEW American government learning from PAST mistakes. Perhaps three party's Democrats, republicans, and NATIVE AMERICANS all with the same amount of representation in the house and senate with term limits and other improved rules to their serving as well as lobbying limits and other important items. The final thing would be to return to the constitution "IN TOTO" complete with the EXISTING amendments. Any further amendments would need a VOTE BY THE PEOPLE NATIONWIDE.
Now don't get comfortable and get out and talk it up and VOTE out the socialist thieves.

Well, Obama is temporarily powerful. That will all end this fall.

Wait until November there will be many more. Even Boxer said today every state is in play in November. She is in trouble in her state. Can't wait until November 2010.

The race in NY was for a Republican district. But the Republican chiefs nominated someone no one supported. Though she dropped out she was still on the ballot. Her votes were the difference between the Democrat candidate and the conservative 'independent'. Rarely does a non-incumbent 'independent' win and he didn't in this case, though he came close.

This was an off year election, which meant very few voted. After their victory the Dems breathed a sigh of relief, instead of reading the writing on the wall. They learned nothing going into the NJ and Virginia race....and seemed to be trying to ignore the Mass results, at their own peril.

I think it's a real twist of irony that health care was passed for "poor dead Teddy" but it was the person voted to take his seat the subsequently killed the bill. I can see the Democrats saying it was the Republicans who killed healthcare when it comes time to start campaigning, as if this were really a bad thing. It's really quite funny to sit back and watch Coakley and Obama point the finger at each other in true Democratic fashion. I expect Coakley to come out and say she inherited the loss from Bush any day now. Here in Central WI we're blessed (??!!??) with having Dave Obey representing us. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for him and others. The people have spoken and its time to start listening. Not just ram through legislation that's "better than nothing"

[Obama has been] forced to back off and regroup. The idiocy of shoving heath care up the county's butt was clear to everyone Tuesday, If he had he'd have suffered unimaginable loses in November. Look for him to scale things back... and continue or actually intensify GOP Bashing between now and November.

Absolute genius!! Kind of reminds me of what the late Kurt Vonnegut said about his book, 'The Breakfast of Champions.' In essence, he said it all in the book and saw no need to write anything else ever agian. Obviously he wrote more and will continue to read your genius as long as you decide to share...

After Tuesday's election, most of the democrats are moving into their "crawfish" mode. Even Pelosi said there was no rush to pass the healthcare plan. What a difference one election can make!
