Oversteering to the Left

Question:  re: Propaganda...By The Book Racing legend Brain Redman locks 'em up at the Nurburgring.

So tell me why it's okay for YOU to describe your own president as a "would-be dictator" or "novice wimp", yet "un ignorante" [spoken by Hugo Chavez] is somehow beyond the pale? As an outsider, I'm amazed at the unwillingness of most Republicans to accept the results the democratic process which you so vociferously espouse. Why make treasonous comments about your commander in chief, when even your own worthy leader, Mr. McCain, has admonished you to support him in these difficult times? Most of us beyond your borders are thankful to have someone as intelligent and articulate and BRAVE at the helm, and are both grateful and surprised that he takes as much time as he does to try to explain his policy. We're tired of the chest-thumping that has characterized US foreign policy for too long, and are relieved that Obama has moved so quickly to open discussions with formerly hostile regimes around the world. It's easy to hide behind a gun, and a lot harder to extend a hand of friendship to an enemy. I'd tone down the rhetoric a notch, if I were you Ed, but then, of course, you wouldn't garner so much limelight yourself now, would you?

Brian Redman
A Canadian on the road in
Texas

Answer: I'm flattered that you believe that I have "limelight'.  I'm just a poor, struggling working stiff blogging for peanuts on the side. However, I do not take being told to "tone down the rhetoric a notch" well -- especially when the air is filled with the other side's rhetoric and it all sounds very much like your admonition to back off.

At this point, our (US citizens') democratic process has been placed on hold as a result of the loss of checks and balances caused, unfortunately, by our own often-corrupt political process.  The only voice that someone who disagrees with the resultant near-dictatorial powers of our so-called representatives has left, therefore, is his or her own voice.

I completely disagree that Obama is BRAVE.  To the contrary, he has been a coward in nearly everything he has done since taking office.  The video proves his bow-and-scrape foreign policy, or lack thereof.  His economic stance amounts to saying: "Regardless of the bank balance I'm gonna keep writing checks until there ain't no checks left."  His staff and cabinet choices have been a sad joke about tax cheats running the IRS.  He refuses to accept job #1 -- acknowledging and fighting the War on Terror.  His "transparency" is characterized by a higher executive orders-per-day average than any other president in history

Obama is articulate, but without a teleprompter he is less so.  Nonetheless, you and I would probably be considered rhetorical genii by now had we been making a prepared speech each day for the last two years.

I completely agree with Chavez that "Obama es un ignorante" but if I ever met up with Hugo he would know -- in no uncertain terms -- that the right to criticize our president and/or call him names is reserved for American citizens (in the First Amendment to our Constitution).  All others had better tread lightly or be ready for a confrontation.

Please get this straight: Sen. McCain has never been a Conservative leader, let alone a Republican leader.  He only looked conservative when compared to the most liberal candidate ever to run for the presidency.

McCain has, however, paid a terrible price in the defense of our rights and freedoms and I'm certain that he would be the first to say, despite his suggestion that we support the guy who got the most votes, that criticism or even non-support is in no way "treasonous" -- that it is, in fact, the reason why he chose to defend our nation during a time when it was even more unpopular to do so.

The term "commander in chief" applies to the president's empowerment as the ultimate order-giver of the US military.  Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to put the genie back in the bottle after the fact so we should choose our top generals more wisely.

But being the commander in chief has absolutely no bearing on the president's power over the civilian citizenry.  As citizens we answer to "the law of the land" and, the last time I checked -- short of making a physical threat -- our Constitutional freedom of speech enables us to write and speak about the president as we see fit.

Incidentally, were you as worried about what Americans said about President Bush and the treasonous-ness of those statements made by the left during his administration?

Enjoy the remainder of your stay here in the USA.  Rest assured that when I return to your nation I will not meddle in Canadian politics.

Editor's Note: Despite his political views I'd still line up for an autograph from Brian Redman, a true legend of high-echelon motor sports.

Your obsession with Chavez is confusing. Why doesn't the right like Chavez? Because he's communist (like china)? Because he criticizes America (like many of our allies)? Most likely because Fox news told you to. "This makes Obama look weak"...unlike Bush who made America look retarded.

Funny how Sarah Palin refuses Stimulus money but she just accepted a deal to get Free Heating Oil from Mr. Chavez.

Obama is a typical Politician. There's so much to pick apart but the Right goes with these worthless attacks.

Mudkips

Poughkeepsie, NY Journal

[Perhaps Chavez is a "typical politician" too and he and Obama are both on the same page. They are both communists, albeit to varying degrees, and they do both criticize US policies. BTW, liberals appear mentally deficient when they must resort to the use of terms like the R-word which they, themselves, have banned as being politically incorrect. You all HATE Bush -- we get it already! -ED]

Chavez is a pig... Obama is an empty suit.... and Bush made us look retarded?  #1. Obama took off the top bargaining chip with the Russians IN A LETTER, good God, did he also ask them if they like him? Check yes or no?  #2. Obama did nothing when N. Korea said hello with an ICBM. #3. Obama goes [to Europe with his tail between his legs.]

At least Obama didn't bow to Chavez like he did to the King of Saudia Arabia!

Republican talking points are so easy.....

"the democratic process has been placed on hold". Nah, it's called an election. Your side lost. To quote the drug addled leader of the Republican Party - "Get Over It" 'Course, he said that in 2001....

"Obama is a coward." Based in part because he shook hands and smiled at a dictator. I guess he should have cowered in the closet? Hid from the guy? Or glared at him sternly when they met? That's just silly, Ed, I know it's the talking point du jour, but I expect better from you. Thanks to Obama's confidence in himself and America, he could be himself around this clown - what do we have to fear from Chavez? And if you read any of the local commentaries from South America, it worked. Venezuela and Chavez are less popular now, America is better liked.

"writing checks". It's called a stimulus, and most economists agree that it's necessary, plus it's starting to work. And I thought conservatives believe that tax cuts yield more money to the Treasury? Or maybe only when they're for rich people? Sorry, I misunderstood there...

"He refuses to accept Job 1" You're kidding, right? He's devoting resources to the places that are the breeding grounds for terrorism, Pakistan and Afghanistan, instead of wasting lives and treasure in Iraq.

"he's articulate, but less so without a teleprompter" Oh the horror.... Have you had your head in the sand for the past 8 years of Presidential dismantling of the English language?

Finally, thank you for this statement: "But being the commander in chief has absolutely no bearing on the president's power over the civilian citizenry" You're absolutely correct - I had this argument with a local rightie blogger awhile back. The Prez is commander in chief of the military, not civilians. Tell you what, though, I won't call you a traitor, like I got called in 2001 when I had the audacity to criticize President Bush.

Craig51

Des Moines, IA Register

[Well, we got Craig all excited today! Fortunately, at least up to this point, the prez has not figured a way to be our (civvies) C-in-C. But I suspect that, in the absence of more center/right reps in Congress, there will ultimately be a way to make it happen.  Now, Craig, you are entitled to your opinion and your arguments with or about anything I write. However, I want you to get it straight once and for all . . . I do not read the talking points -- ever. I launch any e-mail from the GOP, preferring to think for myself. Any similarity between what I write and whatever you read or hear elsewhere is purely coincidental. But then again, the anti-Obama talking points write themselves and are stressed by the daily shill-ing by Briggs, Pelosi and the rest of the troikaphiles. You also know better than most that, more often than not, I get my rants up on Friday and Sunday and beat all the others to their Monday morning quarterbacking. My last two themes (Somali Piracy and the Hugo Incident) were way ahead of the curve. Nothing you have written today refutes what I said about Obama in my correspondence with Mr. Redman but, as usual, your lefty take is a bit fairer and more entertaining than most. Try not to go nukular -- it's bad for your heart.-ED]

Excellent Job, Ed!!!  Nothing like a self righteous Canadian whose sole claim to fame is "We're not the US" and ..uh...we're into

ice hockey.  Sarah Palin is terrific and it's obvious the left fears her.  They are going after her children for goodness sake!
Keep up the good work and keep the faith.

[In fairness to Mr. Redman, he is a Brit (dual citizenship?) and an auto racer/enthusiast, so I doubt that ice hockey does much for him. But  I could be wrong. -ED]

Bravo Brian Redman! It takes a Canadian to really tell it like it is!

[Perhaps Mr. Redman will let us know how well socialized medicine is doing in the Great White North. -ED]

But Eddo, we have socialized medicine here. Why ask what it's like anywhere else? Anyone can go into any emergency room and get health care. If they can't afford it they get it for free. How much more "socialism" do you want? Your health insurance dollars paid for socialized medicine throughout the Bush years. They just didn't get the "reform" part of it yet. I don't know why they are trying to change it. The 45 million Americans without health insurance just go to the hospital when they get sick and you pay for it. It's been that way for decades. Is this just a plot that right wing extremists are trying to pin on Obama? Liberals are just trying to make a broken system better. What's the problem, Eddo?

Draco

Lansing, MI State Journal

[They get to go because guys like me not only pay taxes but co-pay our own way when we need medical care. Last time I went to the ER (for stitches) I spent more time with the receptionist proving that I was insured than I did with the doctor. Meanwhile, welfare recipients were being waved in because everyone there already knew them well. -ED]

Oversteering to the right - OK with you.
Steering toward the center - you call "oversteering to the left"
What a joke this blog is.

[In racing any oversteer condition is problematic and potentially dangerous. At this point Conservatives would be happy with a shift to the center but the administration is driving further to the left every day. That's no joke -- it's an irrefutable fact. -ED]

I have no respect for B. O. or Hugo Chavez and their fist tapping gestures and mile wide smiles. One is a dictator, the other a would be, well on the way to be, dictator. One wants our destruction, the other is working to secure that end. One degrades this country while the other calls this country everything but a good name. The character references of either one would take them out of the running to be a security guard.

One snubs his nose at our government and the other has no reverence for our Constitution, Declaration of Independence or other founding documents. They both bow down to Muslim dictators. One puts down the Bush Administration while the other is flirting with prosecuting those in the Bush Administration.

One shows no care for our sacrifices while the other dishonored those at the gravesite in Normandy by refusing to go there out of fear of offending Germany, but offending those that paid the ultimate price at Normandy and their surviving family members is alright. Both are dangerous men, full of hate and disrespect for this country.

Eddiebloggo...I know this is off your blog topic but I'm just going to say this...the ones that harass you are ruining the site. Hopefully you don't know them in your real life. Their need for power and control is a trip of excessive abuse. Keep on blogging. You only get better with practice.
