Shovel-ready?

Other than chain gang members and barn cleaners (the latter are more likely to be the barns' owners than hired hands) no one uses a shovel anymore.

Many of us here in the winter wonderland scratch our heads as we watch neighbors clear an inch-and-a-half overnight dusting off a 40-foot development sidewalk with a gasoline-engine snow blower.  Where the heck is Al Gore when you need him to measure carbon footprints in the snow?

The fact is, anyone who would ever be willing to earn a living shoveling anything is already gainfully employed doing so.  A good number of those who shovel stuff, of course, are our elected officials.

Therefore, when agents of the troika government-in-training speak of "shovel-ready projects" what they're actually talking about are bull dozer-ready projects, crane-ready projects and pile driver-ready projects.  For the most part, the operators of those kinds of "shovels" are already in pretty high demand and are already earning very taxable middle class wages.

On the other hand, those who are qualified to do little more than wield a shovel at a shovel-ready project are probably too old, too lazy or too out of shape to perform such labor.  What work, for instance, could an unemployed auto assembly line worker be quickly trained to do at a bridge refurbishment jobsite?

More importantly, if we put the ex-autoworker to work sorting and assembling bridge cable fasteners or, for that matter, wielding a shovel, how can we afford to pay him anywhere near the wage he needs to keep making his mortgage payments?

We are all qualified to provide the obvious answer to simple questions like that one...

...Mo' money!

Please put down your glass of Kool-Aid for a moment and think about an answer to another plain, simple question: What will the administration call the next ramped-up socialist spending program once the term "stimulus" has run its course?

Will they ever call a spade a spade...

Back in the USSR...

...or will the next program and the one after that and the one after that be just as "shovel-ready" as the first one?

READER COMMENTS...

I am pretty sure Al Gore is not in political office. Many of us who live in colder climates don't care too much about global warming. Warmer winters sound kind of good to many. By the way I liked your reference to carbon footprints in the snow. It has kind of a visual appeal.

And I thought this was going to be a commentary on the list of "shovel ready" projects that local governments provided to the Fed. Ya, got me Eddo!!

[Aw, lay off poor Algore.  Without his invention of the Internet where would any of us be? -ED]

this "blog" is shovel ready, just like the landmines in the backyard that the retracting snow is uncovering.  eddo, perhaps you can take up the guitar????

Conservatism is anti-Christian.

[There's at least one liberal who won't be blaming fundamentalist Christians for all those years of Conservative control. (Yeah, right). -ED]

Shovel? $789 billion takes a Bull dozer. We're on the express elevator to Federal Debt hell.

Your Grand Old Party of destruction put us in this mess. Why can't they provide leadership rather than snarky comments and other sniper attacks? I think it's a joke that the GOP worries about saving money and balanced budgets when they are NOT in power. It's because all they know to do is criticize. They can't create, plan or originate. They are acting anti-American. They are disingenuous.

["They" are disagreeing, which was perfectly OK until everything "changed".  "They" are a political party, but Conservatives have ALWAYS stood for minimal government, minimal spending and maximum citizens' rights.  Sniper attacks?  No, all of the attacks are out in the open and based on the issues.  How about all of the "change" things Obama is backpedaling on?  Gitmo will close, gay marriage will be supported, Iraq operations will cease and Bush's Defense Secretary will be dismissed when his highness is good and ready.  That's not disingenuous? -ED]

...wow you mean I'm the only one who still uses a shovel?

You sound more like a liberal than a conservative. Just what are you trying to say with the Al Gore comment?

[It was an attempt at humor -- a dig at the hypocrite Gore. I assure you that I am not now nor have I ever been a liberal nor a believer in Gore's global warming scam. It made others laugh...sorry it had the opposite effect on you. -ED]

I hope the American people are "shovel ready". It looks like Obama is going to shovel this country even more in debt. Or does shovel ready mean something else that he is going to dump on us? To be fair, there are many others in the government with their own personal shovels too.
