Obama is so last year.                                                       click here to subscribe to the eddobloggo RSS feedsubscribe via RSS

It's only because a fairly large segment of the population still possesses what used to be called an "attention span" that it took this long for the most overexposed, media-hyped, faux orator of all times to become boooooooor-ing.  Sadly, It might have taken Professor Knowitall even longer had his administration not messed up everything it touched in the interim and had he not hogged every foreign and domestic lens and microphone in sight.

With the onset of boredom and backlash has come the most rapid decline in popularity in presidential history, with the exception of those few who arrived in the White House via succession or without a majority of the popular vote.  This is particularly telling since his term began with a surplus of popularity treasure on which to build.

Now, having bored and annoyed even the most patient taxpayers, Barack Obama will turn to an even fickler audience -- fidgety school kids thrust into ADD by techno-toys and media techniques designed to grab their visual/mental attention at warp speed.

Sure, kids all know him by name and most think he's the "gr8st prz evr".  But like Hanna and Raven, this dude keeps getting older every day.  Each time he's on TV they reverse roles with their parents, asking mom and dad: "Haven't you guys seen this episode of The Obama Hour before?"

No longer do they ask mommy if the Obama t-shirt is clean enough to wear to school today.  That was a kid's lifetime ago; last summer's fad.  Styles change just as quickly as the government and political landscape do in Obama time.

While many of the growing number of adult non-supporters are bristling over The Obama Hour's Big Brother-esque devolution from prime time to school time, it appears more likely that yet another over-exposure backfire may be about to unfold.  Is it realistic to believe that school kids are the demographic that will turn the others back around?

After Obama tells them an empathize-able story about his own education-loving children and those happy, post-homework ice cream reward moments he shares with them, the rest of the hour will seem like an eternity to back-to-schoolers.  Doesn't every hour in class feel like an eternity to most kids?

Even if he takes his suit coat off and rolls up his sleeves, he'll still be just an old guy droning on about the same boring stuff that parents and teachers talk about all the time.  Just wait until the speech is finally over and they are told that they have to write out a list of questions and suggestions as a homework assignment suggested by the teacher-in-chief himself.

So bring him on and let him get on your kids nerves before the 2010 elections.  Make sure they're properly de-briefed and take them out for an ice cream treat as a reward for putting up with an extremely boring day at school.

  • Help them to create those homework questions by questioning their motivation for asking them.
  • Help them to create those homework suggestions by suggesting what has become important to families since he became president.
  • Ask them how they really feel, not how they think they should feel to make their teachers -- including Professor Knowitall -- happy with their answers.

READER COMMENTS...

This is probably the most piercing analysis of the Obama administration's attempt to capture the minds and hearts of our kids. The marketing of Obama that won him the presidency has finally worn thin. We the people are yawning. He'll be gone in 2012.

Laura Eide

The Conservative Underground

This could be a blessing in disguise... if he can't hold the attention of most adults with his long-winded pointless speeches, how in the world is he going to captivate and enchant fidgety second graders????? Maybe this will, if anything, teach our children that an

Obma speech is a huge snooze fest. He needs to lay off trying to indoctrinate our little ones!!!!!

This is poorly written drivel with factually-unsupported rhetoric.  I regret clicking on this link and wasting 5 minutes of my life.  Could Ed please take a baseball bat to his computer?  He is part of the problem, and not the solution.

Indoctrinate these young minds while the 'got them' is still good and parents put up with this crap until they wake-up like at that school in UT.

Every President we've had in my lifetime has made an effort to speak to our future citizens, why are the Right-Wing Loyalists so opposed to THIS President speaking to them. Could it be that he is too tall?

What will the subject of his "Indoctrination"? Personal Responsibility. Isn't that a conservative ideal?

I do agree with you on one part. This is more of what many hear from the parents already, and some will just roll their eyes and utter "whatever". But if just a few at-risk children take his message to heart and try to overcome their situation by taking the results of their life in their own hands, and not allow the community or their peers keep them down, then it is worth it. This is part of the President's personal responsibility of the duties we as nation have assigned to him, and to take that action and make it into to some political rhetoric is immature and lacks integrity.

ColdMockingbird

Montgomery, AL Advertiser

[He had all last winter and spring to present an inspirational hour to school children and few would have criticized him for doing so. But now that he's tanking in the polls and his back's against the wall regarding his socialized medicine initiative, he's suddenly decided to use education and our kids and grandkids to repair his image. This is the "transparency" he promised. Right-wing Loyalists and everyone except Lefty Loyalists can see right through him. Keep denying it if you like. -ED]

Presidents talk to students all the time. The amazing part of this is that those same parents will allow their children to go to movies that are questionable, watch TV shows that are full of garbage and play video games to warp their minds. a President wants to talk to them about being better students and people get up in arms. READ THE SPEECH ON MONDAY AND SEE IF IT IS SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA. WHATEVER HE DOES THE PEOPLE THAT HATE PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL NOT STOP. THEY WOULD DISAGREE IF HE SAID ALL TAXES WILL CEASE.

wacos

Cincinnati, OH Enquirer

[See comment directly above, to which I would add...I don't disagree with you, wacos, about parental supervision and I won't criticize Obama's message to students if it is completely un-political. But what are the chances of that happening given a sneak peek at the post-speech homework assignment. -ED]

Wow -- again very detailed and organized with passion...I liked it very much, it has a lot of truth to it all.  Obama will have to leave acting school soon, or else?

JonathonHansen

Green Bay, WI PressGazette

Eddo - I love the thought of an out of school public service announcement about the importance of school. Once we get into How can we help "The One" homework assignments is where it goes to far. The left already owns all schools, books, tests, etc. Now they want to grab that last bit of exposure to the kids?

I just looked into our personal family crystal ball and discovered our youngest will be absent Tuesday due to a 24 hour stomach upset!  Guess she'll just have to live without being able to see Erkel do his children's prime time dog and pony show. Hey, Obama should have invited Van Jones (you know, Mr. Green Jeans) to do the show with him. It could be 2-fer the price of one!

You know what bothers me most about this whole indoctrinating speach thing is how it was sneaked in at the last minute. That alone makes me question the motive. Not that the whole thing isn't bothersome.

Casualty

Great Falls, MT Tribune

[Like he's never sneaked anything in at the last minute? Remember the 1100-page $787 billion Stimulus Bill passed in February before the ink dried and legislators had the time to read and digest it. -ED]

You've been on a roll lately Ed. Looks like Hope and Change 2.0 is on the way.

Whatever Magician says Tuesday to a bunch of young skulls full of mush it will be aimed at the parents. He needs to win back the trust of the gulls suffering from early onset Obamaitis. There will be new polls before he reads to Congress on Wednesday.

Used to be that cons supported personal responsibility... but to rif off your title, I guess that was so last year.

We wouldn't want a dem, and a black one at that, to encourage our kids to work hard and stay in school - that's so... well.... un-black....much better that they listen to Kanye, or fitty cent. Heck we've run all of the mexicans out of the country, we need someone to blow our leaves around - better not let those blacks get too uppity, right eddo?

Republicans are truly loons....

Craig51

Des Moines, IA Register

[Knock off the race-baiting Craig....unless that's the only way "left" for libs to defend Obama against the right. There are plenty of Black and Mexican Conservatives and they are as attentive to their kids' education as any liberal. There are also plenty of white Conservatives -- like myself -- who abhor racism and have done more than most libs have done to promote racial equality and opportunity. It's pretty odd that this great educator had all last winter and spring to go inspirational on students but he has chosen this moment -- when the chips and polls are down and his image is in need of repair -- to speak to kids right here in the USA.  BTW, the last time I checked, the RNC's chairman is an African-American. -ED]

You fear that Obama MIGHT preach politics with talking to school children.....You know that Ronald Reagan used to preach politics to school children right? You people are so fickle and will cry about everything. I hated George Bush, but I would not have kept my children from having the opportunity to have him speak to them...I agree with probing the kids to hear what Obama has to tell them.

Mudkips

Poughkeepsie, NY Journal

The thing that matters most, before any President or Vice President speaks to, or visits with school children, is to make sure he knows how to spell "Potato".  I'm sure President Obama will not put an "e" on it !!

nocturne

Montgomery, AL Advertiser

[Right. That would be "acting stupidly" considering that this C-SPIN speech will be on TV in "all 57 states." -ED]

The man soon wears thin, very thin. Children will listen. They may be bored. But, indoctrinated? I doubt it. It matters little what the children think, since they do not vote as a block or as anything. The Dems, or some of them, will never give up, if only they realize in time that this President will be a disaster for the USA and before he is finished, there will be no Democratic Party of importance left.

I'll get slammed for this, but isn't that how Hitler worked with his Hitler Youth? Get 'em while their young!

Quite frankly I don't have an issue with 'The One' addressing our kids. On the one hand it could be harmless and a non event.
On the other hand, if he blatantly exposes his Socialist agenda by trying to use our children as a means to and end, then good bye Demoncratic Party.

I hope you are correct that the dear leader's lesson to the children will turn out to be a snoozefest. I have watched all his speeches and news conferences with a hope he would say something informative, but have been sorely disappointed. I have vowed not to waste anymore of my time on his dronings. I believe most people are sick of him and would rather he shut up, although I'm sure his sycophants and toadies hang on his every word.

my my my...how quickly we forget...where exactly was out last "president" at ,when we were attacked on 9-11-01?...ohhh yeah he was talking to elementary students!!! so I guess it was ok for him...but NOT this president. once again...you "people" amaze me with your hatred and closed minded thinking...please stop and think...before you engage your mouth or keyboard. but I guess that would be impossible, because then you couldn't spew your venom!! I'm glad to see that the "Limbaugh" effect is in full bloom  but we understand change is hard , and some people will say anything to STOP it !!!

jack

Durand, MI

[When was the last time you threw together a run-on sentence that didn't have a "you people" a Bush reference and a "Limbaugh" in it?  You fail to remember that GW Bush had dedicated his presidency to education (No Child Left Behind) and that he and Mrs. Bush were continuously interactive with kids -- in person.  It is perhaps symbolic then that the War on Terror -- quite literally -- interrupted his ongoing education agenda.  Now read my previous comments to ColdMockingbird and wacos up-thread and try picking on an easier "you people" target next time.  You really need some practice if you're going to get those lefty talking points to work for you, jack. -ED]

Yeah, Obama and his administration seems like a TV "Reality show" that is getting old.
