The good news: New York's Democrat Governor David Paterson is willing to admit that hyper-spending, bloated state government, a dysfunctional legislature, a business-unfriendly environment and top-to-bottom runaway liberalism are all contributing factors to the state's current near-bankruptcy.

The bad news: In order to overcome shortfalls, mass state worker layoffs, the cessation of services and the closure

New York Governor David Paterson

New York Governor David Paterson

of state-run facilities, Governor Paterson has proposed some new supplemental taxes even though New Yorkers are already among the most-taxed citizens in the USA.

Cigarettes are selling for about $7.00 a pack in New York, largely due to the highest tobacco tax in the land, to which an additional $1.56 per pack state tax will soon be added. But there's no need to worry that this fundraiser could fail if tax-poor New York smokers suddenly go cold turkey en masse.

Paterson has a neat back-up plan that could raise even more revenue, especially among notoriously ravenous recent nicotine quitters.  He calls it the Sugar Tax.  Presumably, this tax on snack foods and soft drinks that contain sugar will account for huge additional revenue.

But something tells me, despite the coincidental health benefits of The Sugar Tax is coming to New York supermarkets.raising taxes on unhealthy products like smokes and soda pop, that it will ultimately be necessary to tax artificially-sweetened products and even smoking cessation aids in order to acquire the necessary additional revenue.

Presently, all food items except for prepared foods are sales tax-Food Stampsexempt at New York check-out counters.  Coincidentally, the exact same range of food products can be purchased with Food Stamps.

So will food stamp recipients be forced to pay the Sugar Tax out of pocket?  Will they be exempted in favor of cash-paying consumers paying the freight?  Will the federal government allow New York to collect the tax as an inclusion of food stamp use?

The Old Lady Who Swallowed a FlyCan you see how adding so-called sin taxes to the mix could be like the old lady who had to swallow the spider and all of those other creatures just to make the fly go away?

The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

sample this song

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
that wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly.
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird.
How absurd to swallow a bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
that wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly.

Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
that wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly.
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
My what a hog, to swallow a dog.
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat, to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
that wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly.
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.
I don't know how she swallowed a cow.
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog.
She swallowed the dog, to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
that wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed the fly
Perhaps she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a horse...

She's dead of course!

Thanks for reprinting the original, didn't have to look it up. The local paper said New York cigarettes were going upwards of ten bucks a pack. Now if they would apply those taxes where they said they would...

We have the same problem in Wisconsin. Taxation is one of the two conservative ways to balance the budget. It does seem to be causing more of an issue to tax things the poor need, rather that tax where the excess cash is burning a hole in the pockets of the wealthy.

[Thank the conservatives that you have a balanced budget.  We have no conservatives here and it's pretty obvious. -ED]

I have visited upstate NY before and its beautiful countryside. I made a couple of notations in some of the differences between here and there that really stuck out. First, you fellas can't really own a pistol without being in law enforcement or security.
Everything is against the law- I joked with some folks who live there and told them I was going to print out a flier to let newbies to the area know what is actually legal! Probably only printed on one side...Summer last about a month.

Taxes- the point of your post- I don't know how in the world youse guys survive up there. Unemployment must be close to 20% and to add misery to that - they tax everything beyond belief. Hang in there Ed, Maybe y'all can start from scratch someday.

P.S. Don't even think about moving down here- it's too hot for ya and we already have enough "new" Texans coming from the South.

[Summer lasts a lot longer than you think but winter is brutal in these here parts.  Otherwise, you got it pretty right, Tex. -ED]

"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Great old song eddo, thanks for dragging it out of the closet of my memory banks. It would appear common sense has left the country.

Need and want are two entirely different things. You don't need cigarettes, and you don't need soda. Don't get me wrong, I am against excessive taxation which this clearly is. The biggest abusers of tax dollars is the government, not the rich or the poor. The government has latched onto the lifeblood of this Country and they are in the process of draining it dry.

Soon they'll add taxes to fry that burger. There is no end in the politicos minds today Ed. Why don't they, Democrats and Republicans simply stop spending. It's not that hard. The citizens of this country have done it for the past four years just to feed the habits in office.

eddo, you bone headed, slime ball, hate spreading conservative Bloggosaurus... (feel appreciated now?) You give us
yet another example of the brilliance of liberal problem solving skills in action. He's following the Obama game plan, isn't he?

Not sure if history ever reveals a time where taxes have been levied specifically for the benefit of those being most heavily taxed.

OSheila

...Why are you so upset about a corrupt governor pushing more taxes on top of even more taxes? You know there are subway engineers in NYC making over $200,000 a year, and transit guards making over $100,000 a year who will lose their jobs if these taxes don't go through. If the taxes don't go through it will lead to massive marches by unions for higher wages and that will disrupt everything. They have got to pass more taxes, borrow more money and increase spending just to stimulate the economy after everything Bush did to ruin it.

[It wasn't ALL Bush's fault. What about Giuliani and Pataki? Eliot Spitzer -- Paterson replaced him after the Client 9 prostitution scandal -- wasn't around long enough to ram home the point that he had inherited all of those problems. -ED]
