Ugly Americanism

If, as a goodwill endeavor, the idea of a Euro-tour by the new President of the United States made sense to Americans and Europeans of all political persuasions, Obama's presumptuously pedantic town hall meeting in Strasbourg, France provided proof that our egotistical president-in-training is both naive and undiplomatic.

Just prior to answering -- in the form of mini-lectures -- a series of audience participation questions, Obama led with one of his signature over-length, telepromptered campaign lecture speeches.

There was a level of pomposity on such topics as global warming, NATO unity, the international war on terror (described as such in every nuance sans the applicable Bush Era title), global warming and the free world's universal-ization of European-style socialism that made all but the waning number of Obama worshippers wince.

The new kid on the block continuing to lecture experienced world leaders is akin to him telling Americans, during the campaign, that we need to keep enough air in our tires to combat four buck-a-gallon gas prices. Unconscionable.

When this administration finally gets muted the next Secretary of State will need to bring Reset Buttons to our allies as well as our adversaries.

Gift-giving: A Royal Pain In The A-pod

"I say Phillip.  Have the servants replenished the supply of those ghastly silver-framed photographs?"

"Why do you ask mum?"

"The Obamas are arriving later today and one of those autographed photos of me would make the perfect reprimand gift."

"Reprimand gift, Elizabeth?  I don't quite understand."

"After President Obama's thoughtless gift to Gordon Brown last month -- that mere box of Hollywood DVD's -- a photo of an elderly British woman in an unfashionable suit is the perfect way to say: You have much to learn about international diplomacy, young man."

"Precisely why your subjects and I love you, mum.  Give us a hug."

"Alas, you mean well Philip.  But you know how I despise being manhandled!"

20/20 in the 20th

Do you remember the words of the old Burl Ives ditty about the old lady who swallowed a fly?

She swallowed a bird to catch the spider that wriggled and wiggled and jiggled inside her...she swallowed the spider to catch the fly but I don't know why she swallowed the fly...perhaps she'll die.

In other words, the First Lady of Pants Suits got Peter Principled so her hand-picked replacement, the Clintonista congresswoman from our upstate New York district, needed to be replaced.  We swallowed the fly this past Tuesday, casting our votes in a special election that will, once again, enable us to have a representative vote in Congress.

Despite the fumfering Press Secretary's spin that his boss's candidate had won a mandate for the president since the 20th CD has many more registered Republican versus Democrat voters, this one is far from over.

The Special  Election Day result may stand as a 13, 25 or 65 vote lead -- depending on the news source -- by Scott Murphy (D,L) over Jim Tidisco (R,C).  But calling it a mandate for the president because the 20th CD has many more registered Republican than Democrat voters is a gross exaggeration.

Firstly, the seat had been held by Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand for over two years as a result of her winning the last two elections for the 20th CD seat.

Secondly, New York's largest Obama-friendly union conglomerate (civil servants) revolves around the state capital, Albany, which is located within the district.

Finally, there are in excess of 10,000 absentee ballots yet to be counted.  With a large percentage of those coming from generally more conservative members of the armed forces and from retirees and non-government workers overseas and in other states, a mandate for either party is, at best, weeks from being known...

...and that's if the candidates' attorneys don't swallow the spider and force the courts to swallow the bird.

When the chief executive heaps blame on the US, expect the Europeans to exploit it. Is he naive? Not likely, he's pushing an agenda that intends to tear down independent capital and replace it with liberal ordained capital.

Eddo, I thought you were getting phased out? I won't go looking for you, but, as long as you're here....

I think it's funny that you conservatives are all up in arms about all the things Obama says and does while abroad. "He's so naive" you say. "He's lecturing experienced leaders" you say. Well, he gets standing ovations, he gets "experienced world leaders" clamoring to take photos with him. He gets "experienced world leaders" who can't come to an agreement to, well, come to an agreement. For the first time in 8 years, we don't hear "Down with America" being chanted. I'd say he's doing pretty well...

As for the "ipod incident" It's been widely reported in the British news that not only was the Queen ecstatic with the gift, she actually requested the gift. She doesn't have an ipod capable of video. They also brought her a rare signed copy of a Rogers and Hammerstein book. What was loaded onto the ipod? Show tunes, which she LOVES, and video from her visit here two years ago (you remember that visit, the one that Bush tried to make her 100 years older than she was, and he winked at her, like a frat boy?) But, there's no point in letting actual facts get in the way of a good smear..."When President Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace he put a modern twist on the traditional exchange of gifts by presenting her with an iPod. The Queen was delighted as the iPod was loaded with images of her trip to Virginia as part of her official tour of the United States two years ago, in 2007."

The MINORITY, which is getting smaller and smaller, believe the BS, but the MAJORITY, PLUS Europe knows better.

[Europeans being lectured that they have to pony up, tow the mark, be a larger part of the War on Terror, have a bigger participation in Afghanistan and Pakistan and, in essence, love America or leave it is so far from the "change" that was promised that it should make libs' heads spin faster than anyone else's. If Bush or Rice had insinuated that it's time Euros realized that the US has been doing most of the heavy lifting up to this point you can only imagine the left's reaction to one of the few truths Barry-0 has spoken since he arrived on the scene.

The Queen thing? Accurate or not it is my idea of what foreigners are REALLY saying about your president -- which is certainly more objective than what either you or I might say. And I never worked the word "latifah" in, although it was tempting.

You didn't comment on my 20th CD piece but, even if Murphy wins by a few votes, it certainly would not indicate a shrinking minority given that I live in the bankrupt socialist republic of NY. So get off that high horse and grab a refreshment that doesn't come out of a packet. -ED]

The new kid on the block continuing to lecture experienced world leaders is akin to him telling Americans, during the campaign, that we need to keep enough air in our tires to combat four buck-a-gallon gas prices. Unconscionable.  It seems to me that the "Ugliest Americanism" is someone wearing funny ties, taking comments out of context and pawning them off as intelligence.

[I would encourage you to do two things: 1) Read the transcript and/or view the video 2) Realize that he's the prez and I'm just a guy wearing a funny tie. -ED]

The queen wanted an iPod more capable than the one she had? Maybe she needs another handbag and a box of gloves. How ridiculous. obama's ego is apparent to all and even though the people allowed in the "town hall" may have been polite, that does not mean enthusiastic. Considering the Germans and the French will not do as he wants shows the truth. Your Congressional District should go Republican if the percentage of absentee ballots are statistically normal. Let us know.

[I'll keep you all posted about the Frankenberry-esque antics in the 20th CD. Funny...no one has picked up on the "manhandling" part of my Buckingham Palace fantasy piece meant to point out the Obamas sheer disregard for diplomacy and protocol. -ED]

Man Mr. eddobloggo, You have struck an American nerve. You have written a great piece of opinion. Most times I like your writing, But this one takes the prize of Ignorance.

The New Kid On the Block Is our great leader of this free world. Mr. Barack Obama Deserves the chance to be the President. Is It by chance that Mr. Obama Is real and not fake that bothers you to write about him leaning up against the wall or desk. Try to Imagine History and question your own stupidity for nothing better to write then Bashing Our "New President" In office, And I will tell you he Is for real and has done more positive public relations for the U.S.A. then I can remember any other leader doing so In the 21ST Century In his early Administration.

The questions from the European Council and Media were awful and quite boring. The Questions were not scripted for him like past Presidents have had done for them.

Mr. Obama has been a one man saving crusade since he took office. He cannot be expected to save the Entire World without the mutual partnership and respect that should be given back to him In these uncertain times that were created NOT by him. Other Countries that fail to see his good will fall behind, And It won't be because he was leaning over to take a rest, But rather because no one would help the Man stand taller to do his Job.

Mr. eddobloggo I am not attacking your free speech,-- say what you will, but surely you must know the facts, And the simplest fact I will tell you Is Mr. Obama was just sworn Into the White House 3 months ago. Don't you think he deserves a break, the world fell apart for ten years, and now the Europeans think that he should just wave a Magical Wand over the World to save the Negative that don't give him a chance.

Jonathon N. Hansen

Menominee, MI

[Respectfully, Mr. Hansen, I don't see where Mr. Obama has done anything thus far (OK it's only been three months) but ramp up spending in the name of socialism, blame every mess we're in on others and take himself and his lectures and speeches way too seriously.  For example, he lectured for the removal of GM's CEO (as a Michigander you probably know many people in the auto industry and may, yourself be an employee of a domestic automaker) but said not one word about the the other half of the problem (the UAW) let alone calling for new management there for a "change" and a fresh new all-around start.  I can see through the hypocrisy at this time.  Unfortunately you can't.  I write opinion pieces (as you accurately stated in your first paragraph) and my opinion about the president will only be changed if and when he begins to function within his "pay grade". -ED]

Unfortunately, your perception of reality seems to have become severely distorted by your need to try to make all things Obama look like failure.  You couldn't be more wrong about it this time.  Unlike his predecessor, President Obama is well-regarded in Europe and his election alone took the U.S. light years forward in international relations.  While that doesn't impress neocon nationalists, it will serve our Nation well going forward.  There is a reason that the GOP finds itself as a shrinking minority and one important element is that there are still too many "freedom fries" folks who are into jingoism and simply don't get it.  Your column shows that you are one of them.  I've had the opportunity to visit Europe many times before and during the George W. Bush administration, so I was able to experience the tremendous damage  first hand.  I'm pleased to see it being undone and what I saw coming from Europe this week is exactly what I voted for.

Jim Rosenberg

Wausau, WI
[I'm glad you're so happy, Jim.  You and neocons knew exactly what we would get from Obama.  Unfortunately, the vast majority in the middle will ultimately be disappointed that they voted for socialism rather than mere "change".  Joe the Plumber was right and there are flyover states full of guys like him who wouldn't be Euro apologists if their lives depended on it. -ED]

His town hall meeting in Strasbourg served him and us well. He has sky high popularity numbers in Europe and great

communications skills. Why not use them to gain international help with our problems. He is a better speaker than even
Reagan and has something "Dutch" didn't have a lively intellect to compliment his oratorical skills. Your knee jerk conservative criticism of him is not reality based.

[Rhetorically speaking...........-ED]

During the G-20 conference, Obama officially announced the reduction in US nuclear weaponry, so that Iran will be more amenable to sitting down to talk with the US. In other words, he’s again announced to the world that the USA is no longer a threat to anyone—let alone terrorists. Never before in our soon to be short-lived history has the United States of America had this sort of a leader who has now announced—in no uncertain terms—that it is his plan and duty to dismantle and destroy the country he represents. He, his administration members and his Congress (with extraordinary assistance from most notably Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd and their friends) have devastated the US economy, are in the process of eliminating the First and Second Amendments—and the entire US Constitution—have ended free enterprise, established his national youth indoctrination—if not police—force (via the GIVE—Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education—Act) and have begun the process of taking over virtually all private companies.

In not yet 100 days, Obama and Company have almost destroyed this country. Under this constant and increasing onslaught and devastation from within—by our “leaders”—can the USA stand much longer? Seriously, can it? -by Sher Zieve CFP

I didn't think we would get a socialist-dictator who continues to campaign who thinks so little of our country and it's accomplishments.  I can't see how will ever get out of debt.  (Remember Khruschev who said "America will fall from within".  Do Americans really want world government headed  Who said, "if we forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under." The great messiah took 500 aides; 12 teleprompters and 8 aids for  Michele to got to Europe . Do Americans really want to rule by the UN?

mshtc

After a two year period of complete democrat "socialist dictatorship", we should about all be equal, (illegals to middle class) and equally as poor as one another. (the spread/share the wealth concept). If I'm going to be forced to live under those circumstances, then it's time for us to relocate to property that we own outside of the U.S.
